The DGVS Prize for Neurogastroenterology, endowed by the Foundation for Neurogastroenterology in the amount of 5,000 euros, is intended to honour and promote scientists working in clinics and institutes in Germany.

Promotion of research careers.

The Neurogastroenterology Award of 5,000 euros is intended to honour and support scientists working in clinics and institutes in Germany. In particular, young scientists at the beginning of their research careers are to be supported. The basis for the award are internationally highly ranked publications or groundbreaking research results of ongoing studies. The award winners should be or become members of our society.
The research prize is awarded at the annual meeting of the German Society for Gastroenterology, Digestive and Metabolic Diseases (DGVS).
Applications should be sent to the board of the Foundation for Neurogastroenterology, enclosing a curriculum vitae and a scientific activity report. In addition, all documents must be submitted in an electronic format (Word or PDF file).

Research Award for Neurogastroenterology 2021

Dr. med. vet. Monica Sanchez-Ruiz

The research prize for Neurogastroenterology of the DGVS, which is awarded annually by the Foundation for Neurogastroenterology, was awarded to Dr med. vet. Monica Sanchez-Ruiz, Institute of Neuropathology at the University Hospital of Cologne and the Faculty of Medicine, at the 76th Annual Meeting of the German Society for Gastroenterology, Digestive and Metabolic Diseases (DGVS) in 2021.

Prof. Dr. med. Paul Enck

The DGVS research prize for Neurogastroenterology, which is awarded annually by the Foundation for Neurogastroenterology, honoured Prof. Dr Paul Enck in 2020 for his extraordinary lifetime achievement in the field of neurogastroenterology.

Research Award for Neurogastroenterology 2019

Prof. Dr. med. Jost Langhorst

The research prize for Neurogastroenterology of the DGVS, which is awarded annually by the Foundation for Neurogastroenterology, was awarded in 2019 to Prof. Jost Langhorst, MD, Clinic for Integrative Medicine and Naturopathy, Sozialstiftung Bamberg, as part of the 74th Annual Meeting of the German Society for Gastroenterology, Digestive and Metabolic Diseases (DGVS).

Research Award for Neurogastroenterology 2018

Priv. Doz. Dr. med. Jutta Keller

The research award for Neurogastroenterology of the DGVS, which is awarded annually by the Foundation for Neurogastroenterology, was presented in 2018 at the 73rd Annual Meeting of the German Society for Gastroenterology, Digestive and Metabolic Diseases (DGVS) to PD Dr med. Jutta Keller, Head of Functional Diagnostics / Sonography, Israelitisches Krankenhaus Hamburg.
The Foundation for Neurogastroenterology hereby recognises her work on advances in the diagnosis and classification of gastric and intestinal motility disorders, which has been published in high-ranking journals.

Neurogastroenterology Research Award 2017

Peter Helmut Neckel, M.Sc., B.Sc

The 2017 research prize of the Foundation for Neurogastroenterology was awarded to Mr Peter Helmut Neckel, M.Sc., B.Sc., Institute of Clinical Anatomy and Cell Analysis, Eberhard Karls University Tübingen, at the 72nd Annual Meeting of the German Society for Gastroenterology, Digestive and Metabolic Diseases (DGVS).

The Foundation for Neurogastroenterology hereby acknowledges his work on cell biological and histological/anatomical issues in the enteric nervous system.In particular, his contributions on the molecular biological elucidation of regulatory mechanisms of proliferation and differentiation of enteric neural progenitor cells of the postnatal murine and human intestine. He pays special regard to the canonical Wnt signalling pathway as well as the establishment of novel tissue clarification methods on murine and human gastrointestinal tissue and their analysis using state-of-the-art light and electron microscopy.

Research Award for Neurogastroenterology 2016

Dr. med. Miriam Goebel-Stengel

The research prize of the Foundation for Neurogastroenterology 2016 was awarded to Dr med. Miriam Goebel-Stengel, Medical Clinic 1, Martin-Luther Hospital, Berlin, for her work on "The Neuronal Mediation of Stress Using Animal Models" at the 71st Annual Meeting of the German Society for Gastroenterology, Digestive and Metabolic Diseases (DGVS). The Foundation for Neurogastroenterology hereby acknowledges the groundbreaking work of her scientific activity and the high-ranking publications in recognised journals.

Research Award for Neurogastroenterology 2015

Dr. med. Matthias Engel

As part of the 70th annual conference of the DGVS, the Neurogastroenterology Foundation awarded the €5,000 research prize for outstanding scientific achievements in the field of neurogastroenterology. The 2015 award winner is Dr med. Matthias Engel from Erlangen. He receives the award for his work on the "dual role of peptidergic sensory neurons of the colon, which on the one hand play an important role in pain processing and on the other hand in the pathogenesis of chronic inflammatory bowel diseases through the release of proinflammatory neuropeptides".

Research Award for Neurogastroenterology 2014

Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Andreas Friebe

The 2014 research prize of the Foundation for Neurogastroenterology was awarded to Prof. Dr rer. nat. Andreas Friebe, Institute of Physiology, Chair of Physiology I, Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg, at the 69th Annual Meeting of the German Society for Gastroenterology, Digestive and Metabolic Diseases (DGVS). The Foundation for Neurogastroenterology hereby honours his work in which a dual mechanism within nitrergic neurotransmission could be described.

Research Prize for Neurogastroenterology 2013

Dr. med. Ihsan Ekin Demir & Dr. vet. med. PhD Gemma Mazzuoli

The research prize of the Foundation for Neurogastroenterology 2013 was awarded on the occasion of the 68th Annual Meeting of the German Society for Digestive and Metabolic Diseases (DGVS) to Dr med. Ihsan Ekin Demir, Surgical Clinic, Klinikum rechts der Isar, Technical University of Munich and to Dr vet. med. PhD Gemma Mazzuoli, Technical University of Munich, Center of Life and Food Sciences Weihenstephan, Department of Human Biology. The research prize honours the work of Dr Demir on "aspects of neuropathic-neuroplastic changes in pancreatic carcinoma and chronic pancreatitis in simultaneous comparison with other gastrointestinal tumours" and the work of Dr Mazzuoli on "aspects of sensory signal processing in the enteric nervous system and identification of a new class of mechanosensitive neurons". The research work was carried out at a high scientific level and was highly published.

Research Award for Neurogastroenterology 2012

Priv. Doz. Dr. med Andreas Stengel

The research prize for Neurogastroenterology 2012 was awarded on the occasion of the 67th Annual Conference of the German Society for Digestive and Metabolic Diseases (DGVS) to PD  Dr med Andreas Stengel, scientific assistant at the Medical Clinic with a focus on psychosomatics, Charité, Campus Mitte, Berlin. The research prize recognises Dr Stengel's work on the importance of gastrointestinal food regulatory peptides in the field of hunger and satiety regulation in animal models. Dr Stengel's research work was carried out at a high scientific level and published in a high-ranking manner.

Research Award for Neurogastroenterology 2011

Priv. Doz. Dr. med. Martin A. Storr

The research prize for Neurogastroenterology 2011 was awarded at the 66th Annual Meeting of the German Society for Digestive and Metabolic Diseases (DGVS) on 15 September 2012 to PD Dr med. Martin A. Storr, scientific assistant at the Medical Clinic 2, LMU Munich Hospital. The Foundation for Neurogastroenterology hereby acknowledges the work of Dr Storr on the protective mechanism of cannabinoids against gastrointestinal inflammation. It is evident that Dr Storr's research will continue at a high level.

Research Award for Neurogastroenterology 2010

Dr. rer. nat. Beate Niesler

The research prize for Neurogastroenterology 2010 was awarded to Dr rer. nat. Beate Niesler, Group Leader 5-HT3 Receptor Genes, Institute of Human Genetics, University Hospital Heidelberg, for her work on the 5-HT3 receptor gene and especially her genetic studies on the 5-HT3 receptor subtypes in the aetiology of irritable bowel syndrome. By awarding Dr Niesler the prize, the Foundation for Neurogastroenterology acknowledges the high scientific and clinical value of her work.

Research Award for Neurogastroenterology 2009

Dr. sc. hum. Marco Metzger

The prize for Neurogastroenterology of the DGVS, donated by the Foundation for Neurogastroenterology, was awarded at the 64th Annual Meeting of the German Society for Digestive and Metabolic Diseases (DGVS) on 1 October 2009 to Dr sc. hum. Marco Metzger, Dipl.-Ing. Biotechnology (FH), Junior Research Group Leader of the ENS Neural Stem Cells Unit at the Translational Centre for Regenerative Medicine (TRM) of the University of Leipzig. The Foundation for Neurogastroenterology hereby acknowledges the work carried out by Dr Marco Metzger on neural stem cells, which has been published in high-ranking specialist journals.

Research Award for Neurogastroenterology 2008

Dr. Viola Andresen

The research prize of the Foundation for Neurogastroenterology was awarded at the 63rd Annual Meeting of the German Society for Digestive and Metabolic Diseases on 2 October in Berlin to Dr Viola Andresen, research associate and assistant physician at the Medical Clinic of the Israelitisches Krankenhaus, Hamburg. The prize was awarded in recognition of Dr Andresen's work on the use of different methods to address pathophysiological, genetic-epidemiological and therapeutic issues relating to functional gastrointestinal diseases, in particular irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Research Award for Neurogastroenterology 2007

Priv. Doz. Dr. Martin E. Kreis

The research prize of the Foundation for Neurogastroenterology was awarded during the 62nd Annual Meeting of the German Society for Digestive and Metabolic Diseases on 13 September in Bochum to PD Dr Martin E. Kreis, senior physician and head of division "Colo-rectal Surgery" of the Surgical Clinic of the Großhadern Hospital of the Ludwig Maximilian University Munich. The prize was awarded in recognition of Dr Kreis' work on "Vagal Modulation of Intestinal Afferent Sensitivity to Systemic Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in the Rat" and his many years of experimental and clinical research activities on postoperative ileus and on neurogastroenterological aspects of inflammatory bowel diseases.

Prof. Dr. med. Thilo Wedel

The research prize of the Foundation for Neurogastroenterology was awarded to Prof. Dr med. Thilo Wedel, Anatomical Institute of the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel, during the 61st Annual Conference of the German Society for Digestive and Metabolic Diseases (DGVS).

Prof. Wedel is 39 years old and has been researching the field of enteric neuropathology at a high level for years. In this field, Prof. Wedel has published groundbreaking work at an internationally high level. The Research Prize of the Foundation for Neurogastroenterology recognises these current works by Prof. Wedel, which represent significant and recognised contributions to the field of neurogastroenterology.

Research Award for Neurogastroenterology 2005

Prof. Dr. med. Dipl. Psych. Hubert Mönnikes

The scientific advisory board of the Foundation for Neurogastroenterology has found a worthy winner for the first research prize in 2005 in Prof. Dr med. Dipl. Psych. Hubert Mönnikes, Medical Clinic with a focus on Hepatology and Gastroenterology, Charité, Campus Virchow-Klinikum, Berlin.

Prof. Mönnikes is 47 years old and has been researching the regulatory mechanisms of the intestinal brain axis under physiological and pathological aspects at a high level for years. The research prize of the Foundation for Neurogastroenterology recognises Prof. Mönnikes' current work, which has been cited most frequently in the international literature by all applicants.
